Oaxaca boutique hotel

2024 — 2027No. 02 · Hospitality · Oaxaca, Mexico · 2024 — 2027

A hotel around a temazcal.

A four-room boutique hotel organised around a ceremonial steam bath.

In Oaxaca the hotel is conceived as a body: it has a navel. That navel is the temazcal — a ceremonial steam bath inherited from Mesoamerican civilisations, a place of purification, care, transmission.

A centre, and everything around it.

Built of local stone, the temazcal sits at the centre of the project and organises everything around it. The four rooms, the spa, the restaurant do not open onto the street. They open onto patios and terraces that converse with this centre. The architecture is turned inwards — towards silence, the warmth of stone, the energies the temazcal concentrates.

The tangible and the intangible are equally built here.

Brick absorbs the warm evening light, keeps the morning cool, tells the duration of matter.

Material that lasts.

Local brick maintains continuity with Oaxaca's building tradition. No façade tries to seduce the street: every effort is placed on the traveller's interior experience, like a threshold crossed into another time.

The project proposes a hospitality that is neither a tourist resort nor a narrative boutique-hotel — but a place of retreat, anchored in the spiritual geography of the Oaxaca valley.
